ADI Guidelines for Submission of a Case Study Presentation

Aims and Objectives of Case Presentation:

1. To demonstrate application of clinical knowledge and skills in implant dentistry. The presentation should be based on a completed case or a series of cases and  include a topic of interest in implantology such as a new technique, certain clinical protocols, cases of clinical excellence, or management of failures or complications.
2. To reflect on the work presented

Structure:

A case presentation should have a brief introduction setting out the aims and objectives of the treatment highlighting special areas of interest and learning objectives etc.

When appropriate, the work should be presented with special reference to the following subtitles/domains:

• Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis
• Treatment Planning and Consent
• Treatment Procedures
• Maintenance and Management
• Reflection on the case & conclusions

1) Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis

A brief summary of:

• patient’s current dental condition including patient’s complaint and dental & medical histories and patient’s wishes and objectives & expectations
• Results of investigations and special tests
• Discussion of risks, complications, treatment plan alternatives,  potential costs and prognosis

2) Treatment Planning and Consent

A brief summary of :

• The final treatment planning process including:
  • indications for treatment
  • clearly identified and stated treatment objectives as well as outcome measures
  • Limitations of treatment and risk factors/modifiers.
  • Evidence base supporting the case presented
• Patient communication, appropriate disclosure and consent process

3) Treatment Provided

A concise summary of the treatment provided making special reference to one or more of the following, when appropriate;

• Justification for deviation from the planned treatment if any
• Concise description of the surgical and restorative aspects of the treatment provided including management of any complications that may have occurred.
• the key surgical & restorative stages  of treatment, including  when relevant:
  • infection control & asepsis,
  • pain & anxiety,
  • Incision making, wound healing, suturing
  • Post operative management, provisional restorations
  • Complications
  • Laboratory procedures

4) Maintenance and Management of Complications

A brief summary of:

• Suggested  maintenance protocol
• Clearly stated “Outcome measures” for long term monitoring of the implant(s).

5) Discussion & Conclusions

• A brief discussion of the case with reference to the current evidence/consensus on the subject
• Reflection and discuss of how this work has changed the author’s practice in a positive or a negative way and any practical tips & recommendations    

6) Presentation Skills:

Following qualities will be judged when selecting cases for presentation:

• Structure: outline; introduction; A&Os; Results; Conclusion & discussion etc
• clarity/content/design
• Logical sequence
• Coherence
