How long do implants last?
Prognosis, risk factors and comparison to other modalities

Implants are now a predictable method for replacing natural teeth, and with more and more practice teams placing more and more implants they are becoming a very common treatment option. The three most common questions that we are asked in our treatment planning clinics are: What are the options for tooth replacement? How long do implants last? Do implants set off airport security scanners? These questions will be fully explored, as well as common complications and risks factors.

Learning Objectives

  • How to ensure we are providing the appropriate treatments for our patients
  • How to educate and inform our patients on the nature, advantages and disadvantages and options of implant treatment
  • Discuss what determines success in implant dentistry including brief outline of mechanical, technical and biological factors
  • How to ensure success in implant treatment by careful risk management and treatment planning
  • Briefly outline complications and problems in implant dentistry to set the scene for Dr Noble and Dr Carson’s talk on triage and handling queries on after treatment problems and complications

Audit, record keeping and logs

Clinical audit may be defined as “a quality improvement process that seeks to improve patient care and outcomes through systematic review against explicit criteria, and the implementation of change.” Not only is it desirable that we should use such tools as audit to improve our patient care and their whole “treatment experience”, it is also a requirement set by the General Dental Council that we should record, measure and audit our patient outcomes. This workshop will look at the process of audit and audit tools currently in use in dentistry today, along with reflective learning, record keeping and logbooks.  By application of these principles we will discover the ADI may help us stay within the set professional guidelines, and most importantly how we, as members of dental team, may play our part in ensuring our patients receive the very best we can deliver in terms of their dental care.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the process of audit and audit tools currently in use in dentistry today, along with reflective learning, record keeping and logbooks
  • Discuss the key information that needs to be recorded with respect to implant treatment and components

Presentation of ADI consensus on peri-implant disease

Peri-implant disease is a contentious topic within implant dentistry. At a Focus meeting in 2010 the ADI explored the aetiology of peri-implantitis. Following on from this meeting, in November 2012 an expert panel formed to reach a consensus on how to identify and treat peri-implant disease at each stage in the process. At this lecture, Professor Nicola West will present the findings from the ‘ADI Expert Panel Consensus Meeting on Monitoring, Diagnosis and Treatment of Peri-implant Disease’.
