Programme

23 May 2014

09:15 to 10:00 Delegate Registration, Tea/Coffee & Exhibition
10:00 to 12:30 Masterclass

The fundamental rationale for a comprehensive treatment approach is a long-term strategy for dental health commensurate with an enhanced level of wellness for our patients. Understanding parameters of disease expression is sometimes confused because of misguided science or parameters that have led to patient adaptation. Formulating specific treatment needs based on an individual’s risk assessment has created new challenges for both the dentist and the patient. Until we have more objective data with better metrics, much of our clinical decision making will remain emotionally driven and empirical. This reliance, in turn, will make us more vulnerable to moral and ethical deliberations that are often confused with our inability to make a proper diagnosis. This ADI Masterclass will reduce the confusion that has been created in our profession.

For example, our knowledge about occlusion has been based on gnathologic principles. These concepts are the basis of a mechanical system with focus on posterior determinants and mutual protection. If it is that simple, why can’t we predict when or why occlusal pathology develops or why can’t we always create a therapeutic occlusion? This programme will focus on biologic principles necessary for developing a functional occlusion. New paradigms will be presented to enlighten participants about understanding occlusal dysfunction.

Learning Objectives

From this lecture participants will learn:
1. A systematic approach for treatment planning every patient in their practice
2. To focus on the four most important diagnostic categories
3. To develop critical risk parameters to minimise failures and maximise successful results
4. Protocols to implement treatment planning strategies.

John C Kois

John C KoisDr Kois received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine and Certificate in Periodontal Prosthodontics with a MSD degree from the University of Washington, School of Dentistry. He maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics in Tacoma and Seattle and is an Affiliate Professor in the Graduate Restorative Program at the University of Washington. He continues to lecture nationally and internationally, is a reviewer for many journals and is the Co-Editor in Chief for The Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry.

Dr Kois is the recipient of the 2002 Saul Schluger Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from both the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is the past President of both the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, and a member of numerous other professional organisations. In addition, he continues to work with restorative dentists at the Kois Center, a didactic and clinical teaching programme.
