The ADI Masterclass “Evidence-based decision making and practical surgical management for sinus augmentation surgery” presented by Stephen Wallace, DDS, USA was held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England on Monday 6 November 2006.

The 150 delegates were treated to a comprehensive intensive session rated excellent by 72% of attendees and more significantly 78% felt that the topic was relevant to their educational needs.

Dr Wallace was a sincere, practical and logical speaker with a wealth of evidence based dentistry. Members stated that it was well worth the effort of travelling to hear such a  ‘master’ of his craft and many seasoned Masterclass attendees commented that this was one of the most noteworthy Masterclasses yet presented by the ADI.

In addition to the Masterclass, and due to a strong demand from the profession, the ADI offered a hands-on workshop featuring both lateral window and osteotome practical experience on models.

40 participants signed up the first week it went on the market and the speaker agreed to repeat workshop for another 40 participants willing to stay overnight to attend the following morning. 

Both workshop groups rated as excellent value with 97% stating that it met their expectations. It was obvious that many more members would like to have been able to attend the workshop and with 98% of participants recommending the course to colleagues it is obvious that there is demand for more practical training in sinus surgery.

The ADI Committee will take this on board together with expounding the need for all GDPs to ensure that they have received sufficient training and mentoring in all aspects of sinus augmentation BEFORE undertaking any surgical procedures on their patients.

Dr Wallace is the author of an evidence-based review of the sinus augmentation procedure and is a co-editor of a text book on sinus elevation surgery.  He has been on the Faculty of New York University’s Department of Implant Dentistry for 12 years and maintains a practice for periodontics in Waterbury C.T.
