Abstract

The need for a bone adhesive is a challenge that has remained unmet. The concept of a "bone glue" to repair simple and comminuted fractures, as well as to glue orthopaedic devices in place, is considered a holy grail.

Today such a product has been developed to satisfy the properties necessary for a bone adhesive. Its simple chemistry, which is free of cytotoxic or mutagenic effects, reacts in a wet environment to form Calcium Phosphoserine Monohydrate which induces a phasic degradation process which appears osteopromotive, forming de novo bone. This imparts characteristics of osteoconductivity and resorbability, ensuring that over time the glue is replaced with new bone, promoting fracture healing and osseointegration. At the same time the glue imparts a high degree of primary stability negating the need for high mechanical bone compression as in press fit or threaded implants and may negate the need for bone plating of fractures.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To learn about the concept of bone glue
  2. To understand how Tetranite works biochemically and histologically
  3. To understand how Tetranite works clinically
