RightAsepsis for dental implants: the theory

It is essential that the strictest infection control is practised to ensure an aseptic technique is used when carrying out implant surgery. The main factor is that the area being operated on does not come into contact with anything that is not sterile. Asepsis is the absence of living pathogenic organisms. When preparing the dental surgery for implants the asepsis technique should involve two dental nurses. Dental nurse 1 will be sterile and dental nurse 2 will be non sterile. Sometimes in busy practices one dental nurse has to perform both roles. This can be achieved with preparation and organisation. If a foreign body such as an implant or bone graft is contaminated when introduced into the tissues it may cause infection, resulting in the loss of the implant or bone graft. Sources of contamination include: instruments, operators, equipment, blood, saliva, the water supply, patients’ skin, etc. A strict "Do Not Touch Anything" that is not sterile applies to the surgeon and nurse. This applies to the other staff members in reverse. If any member of staff is ever unsure about the sterility of an object or area, it is always considered to be non sterile.

RightMedical emergencies in implant surgery

Most of our implant patients are anxious, usually older, and on medication.
This, coupled with them having a more invasive procedure, makes them more
likely to have a medical emergency in the chair. This workshop highlights the importance of a team approach to medical emergencies, goes through the common causes of medical emergencies, and how to prevent them in your practice.  The drug box is explained and you will know what each drug is for and how to use it. This is a hands-on practical workshop presented in such a way that you remember the key messages at the time when you need them - you might just save somebody's life!

RightHTM0105 and implant dentistry

Decontamination and sterilisation are the two of the most fundamental principles of implant dentistry.  The implementation of the new Health Technical Memorandum 01-05 is the biggest and most important change in this area, and affects everybody working in dentistry, but most of all the dental nurse team. The aim of this presentation is to explain the details of the document, and what it means to our implant practice. Furthermore current recommendations suggested by the industry will be presented. Helen will demonstrate what has been done at Glencarin Dental Practice to head toward best practice, and give hints and pitfalls they have found along the way.

DownMiss Kara Moody - UK

Kara Moody

Kara has worked in general practice as a dental nurse for the past 8 years having gained my Oral Health Care in Dental Nursing NVQ level 3 in May 2002. I have since gained further qualifications in Dental Radiography and I’m currently studying for my dental sedation nursing qualification.

I have been fortunate enough to work in all aspects of dentistry, which has encouraged a keen interest in surgical procedures. This has led me to my current position at The Implant Centre in Haywards Heath which opened in October 2006.The centre specifically caters for patients needing implant treatment including a range of grafting procedures which has enabled me to gain advanced nursing skills.

RightSinus lifts

This workshop will firstly look at sinuses – why we have them and what they are. We will then look at how to tell if a sinus will need a Lateral Sinus Graft or just an internal lift to allow dental implant placement will follow this using dental panoramic tomography and CT scans. Kara will then examine the procedure itself and the nurse’s role, covering suction control visibility, the provision of graft material and the use of antibiotics. After looking at infection rates and complications, she will present why it may not be possible to do sinus grafting, and what the alternatives are, which the include the 'All on Four' and 'Zygomatic' implant treatment options.
