John E Davies is a Professor at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Toronto, Canada, with cross-appointments to the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine. He trained as an anatomist, dental surgeon and oral surgeon in the UK. In 1998 he was awarded a DSc by the University of London, England, for his sustained research contributions over a period of 20 years to the field of Biomaterials. He was the recipient of the prestigious Clemson Award for Basic Research in 2000. John is best known internationally for his work in understanding bone healing around implanted devices. He is also the founding president of Tissue Regeneration Therapeutics Inc., an established Toronto mesenchymal stem cell company working in fields as diverse as biomedical defense and lung transplantation. John has edited two books, “The Bone–Biomaterial Interface” and “Bone Engineering” – both of which have been heralded as key reference works; published over 200 scientific papers and book chapters; and filed over 70 patents.
