The very first evidence of successful dental implants dates back to 600 AD, when the Mayans used shells to replace missing teeth. However, it is only in the last 50 years that implant dentistry has rapidly developed to become a routine, predictable treatment option for our patients.
Our understanding of osseointegration has led to the evolution of dental implant materials and techniques — and changes to the accepted paradigms are occurring daily. This progression has been accelerated by international research and education, and in no small part by the sharing of data and knowledge between dentists.
Because of the advantages provided by implant dentistry over other treatment modalities, implants have quickly become an essential tool in the modern dentist’s armoury. More and more dentists are becoming involved in implant dentistry, and there are a variety of ways to become a part of this growing field. Knowing where to start is the first step.
