Patients are becoming more and more interested in dental implants to replace missing teeth. It can provide significant patient satisfaction as well as enabling the clinician to improve their knowledge and surgical skills. This is one aspect within dentistry that needs to be updated after dental school. The GDC’s curriculum for undergraduates does not cover dental implants in detail and is classed as a postgraduate skill. It can be very difficult to know where to start learning about implants and whether to continue in pursuing the subject due to the surgical aspects.

This ADI lecture of surgical aspects in implants provides dental students with an insight on whether to develop their skills and competence further, with confidence. This lecture is aimed at undergraduate dental students who would like to investigate the surgical aspects of implant placement and if they would like to learn how to place implants.

It will illustrate what skills are necessary to surgically and successfully place implants and the competencies that are needed. The lecture will provide a good base of knowledge in surgery and a taster of what to expect in a more formal structured training course.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the indications of implants
  • To understand the medical contraindications of implants
  • To understand the dental contraindications of implants
  • To understand the surgical process of placement of implants
  • To know how to deal with potential surgical complications
