This interactive session will provide monitoring, management and treatment protocols for the dental hygienist and therapist based on the current available literature and professional bodies. A recent review of the evidence based literature will inform assessment and non-surgical treatment of peri-implant complications within the remit and scope of practice of the dental hygienist and therapist. Delegates will learn to assess implants as part of a comprehensive oral examination and utilize existing diagnostic skills to monitor and manage peri-implant tissues. There will be an opportunity to examine hand and powered instruments suitable for implant decontamination, and a section dedicated to oral hygiene aids and their application tailored to the needs of implant patients. At the end of this course, delegates will be competent to assess and monitor the peri-implant tissues for signs of pathology, be aware of a variety of hand and powered systems for effective and safe biofilm/calculus removal around implant structures and be familiar with a range of specialized oral hygiene aids for implant abutments and restorative counterparts.

Learning Objectives:

  • To utilize and expand the diagnostic skills of the dental hygienist therapist in the monitoring and management of peri-implant diseases
  • To gain theoretical and practical experience in non-surgical procedures relevant to the monitoring, maintenance, decontamination and debridement of implants and their restorative counterparts
