Guidance for Mentor and Mentees

Both the mentor and mentee should:

  • Be GDC registered
  • have “adequate and appropriate” indemnity cover (Dentists Act, 2005). This should include specific cover for dental implant treatment appropriate to the level of complexity of treatment undertaken. The parties are advised to contact their defence union to ensure that they have adequate cover to fulfil medico-legal requirements and GDC guidelines before providing implant treatment as a mentor/mentee
  • be suitably trained or experienced

A mentor should:
exercise skill and care in

  • assessing the specific needs of a patient
  • deciding what procedures to allow the mentee to undertake under his supervision
  • assessing the mentee’s ability to perform a particular treatment with respect to an individual patients needs
  • providing proper and adequate level of supervision (direct/indirect) in the circumstances of a given case
  • obtaining patients consent for treatment under supervision

A mentor is responsible for:

  • His/her acts and omissions
  • acts and omissions by mentees
