Condition of entry to the Register

As stated on the invitation, to qualify for entry to the register, each applicant was required to be an ADI Member with at least 5 years' clinical activity in implantology and in addition possess or provide:-

  1. A higher degree or qualification in implant dentistry or
  2. documentary evidence of completion of a structured implant training course (minimum of 70 hours in total of verifiable contact learning) or
  3. documentary evidence of substantial clinical experience or teaching in implantology

All applicants were asked to complete and submit a detailed application form; provide personal statement on what motivated the applicant to become involved in the mentoring programme: and (unless proof could be otherwise provided of previous attendance at a certificated mentor course), to attend a one day mentor training programme organised and accredited by the University of Salford.

University of Salford Role

The ADI sought the co-operation of the University of Salford (accredited mentor provider) to ensure that each prospective mentor ((unless exemption certificate provided) attend a one day mentor training programme at the University of Salford. The University of Salford tutors and accompanying Handbook provided the applicants with:-

  • information on competency based training and assessment of core competencies in dental implantology
  • methods of assessment and how this affects training in implantology
  • teaching and assessment strategies
  • clinical training aims and objectives
  • competence framework for mentors
  • definition of boundaries between mentoring and supervision
  • mentor duties
  • benefits of mentoring/supervision
  • clinical portfolio guidelines
  • interactive session groups
  • discussion and evaluation
