150 guests including ADI Past Presidents and many active ADI members of over 20 years standing joined in a 20th anniversary celebration evening and dedication to Past President, Michael Tarpey. Barry Edwards, Founding President presented an historical view of early implant techniques and personalities and reminded the audience of those early pioneers and their place in today's implant world. Prize winners at ADI Congress
Congratulations to the winners of the first ever ADI research grant. Awarded at this year's ADI Congress, the grant was keenly fought and the standard of applications extremely high. As a result, the Research Grant committee chose to split the grant between two different research projects.
The lucky winners of £5000 each were:
• Nilesh Shah et al, for their proposal on 'Patient consent in implantology'
• Lertrit Sarinnaphakorn, with a proposal on 'The development of surface modified titanium alloy for dental implant: Effect on protein adsorption and osteoprogenitor cell adhesion and proliferation'.
Well done to both parties, who may require the participation of ADI members at various times throughout their two-year research projects, so keep an eye on this site, and especially the members forum, to see if you can be of assistance in any way.
The other prize given out at the Congress was to the the poster presentation winner. Dr Aparna's contribution focussing on the 'Identification and characterisation of salivary proteins on titanium abutments in an in vivo model' won favour with the ADI Scientific Committee, who judged the entries. Dr Aparna was at the Congress to receive her trophy and prize of £1000.

Members National Forum and AGM Saturday 30 October 2004
Thank you to those many many members who supported this inaugural event. In spite of the initial power problems, the day was voted a great success by the near 300 participants. It is obvious from the questionnaires that the event would be welcomed on a regular basis. A tremendous vote of thanks to all speakers for coping so well in the face of adversity!

GDC Implant Dentistry Group Report
4 November 2004
Press Release
Report of the Implant Dentistry Group
At its meeting on 28 October 2004, the General Dental Council's Education Committee considered the report of the Implant Dentistry Group, established earlier in the year to review standards and training in implant dentistry and to make recommendations to the Committee as how best to protect the public.
The report identified that implant dentistry is:
a new and fast growing aspect of dentistry; an invasive procedure which, in circumstances where a dentist has not been adequately trained, poses a risk to patients; an area in which there is a lack of guidance for dentists.
The Implant Dentistry Group recommended that, for the protection of the public, core guidelines for implant dentistry should be established, and that it should be established as a GDC-recognised specialty.
The Committee endorsed the concerns identified in the report. The GDC requires dentists to practise only within their competence, but the report suggests that dentists are practising implantology without adequate training. Whilst the GDC is not responsible for the setting of detailed clinical standards in particular areas of dentistry, it is clear that action is needed to protect patients.
The GDC will be convening a meeting of the relevant professional groups to facilitate the setting and publication of core dental implantology guidelines, and to establish a longer-term mechanism for the updating of such standards guidance.
The question of the establishment of a specialist list in implantology will be referred to the GDC's Specialist Lists Review Group.
