While implantology has been one of the most important developments in the history of dentistry, lasers have been one of the most innovative tools to be used in many branches of dentistry. Lasers, especially the erbium laser, can be used for optimum patient contentment and practitioner satisfaction. More specifically in implantology, osteotomies, gingivectomies, vestibuloplasties can be carried out with success while uncovering implants which is simply brilliant. The use of lasers actually starts before implantation to remove granulation tissues around teeth and to disinfect the defect. Peri-implantitis has been a major draw-back for many practitioners with many tried techniques. Lasers are a strong potential solution to this for both removing granulation tissue around the implants and disinfecting the rough implant surface and the bony defect. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) for biomodulating the healing is a strong tool for optimum results for osseointegration, reducing post-op pain and swelling, treating some complications like nerve injury. The lecture will cover laser use in implantology with clinical examples.
- To identify what lasers are and the types of lasers that maybe used in dentistry
- To understand the use of lasers in implantology
- To examine the relevant literature
- Creating awareness of the use of lasers in dentistry and implantology
- Introducing a tool for practitioners to increase the regenerative capacity and combat infection
