With the loss of a tooth comes a loss of the supporting hard and soft tissue, and the subsequent replacement of the tooth with an implant frequently requires the reconstruction of the missing hard and soft tissue.

Autogenous bone is often cited as the “gold” standard material but the harvesting of this comes at the cost of a second surgical site, which is a huge disadvantage in the eyes of many clinicians and patients. What we need to ask is how autogenous bone compares with the alternatives and also what are the distinct advantages and disadvantages of using it.

If autogenous bone is the gold standard , what are the silver and bronze? How does the “gold” standard compare to the silver and the bronze? Are there many different techniques for autogenous grafting and what are they?

At the the end of this lecture participants will:

1. Understand the differences between different methods of augmentation 2. Understand the surgical steps involved in autogenous bone grading 3. Understand several of the newer techniques that can be used for autogenous bone grafting
