Implant therapy is a very popular modality for our patients but there are long term issues with dental implants and peri-implantitis is a disease which is on the increase we are becoming more aware of, including the histology and the pathology of the disease. 1 in 4 implant patients show signs of peri-implantitis. This presentation will cover the differences between periodontal disease and peri-implantitis and how to manage the disease and maintenance in general practice.

Learning objectives:

  • To understand the differences between periodontal disease and peri-implant disease
  • How to monitor the assess the health of peri-implant tissue and disease around dental implants
  • To understand how to manage peri-implant disease within general practice

Biography

Amit Patel BDS MSc MClinDent FDS RCSEd MRD RCSEng Specialist in Periodontics & Implant Dentist

Amit is the principal specialist and director at Birmingham Dental Specialists in Birmingham. His special interests are dental implants, regenerative and aesthetic periodontics.

Amit graduated from the University of Liverpool and completed a 4 year specialist training programme in Periodontics at Guy’s, King’s & St Thomas’ Dental Institute. Amit was an Associate Specialist in Periodontics at the Birmingham Dental School for 9 years and is still an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry. He has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including lecturing to dental practitioners both in the UK and internationally. Amit is the Regional Representative for West Central England for the Association of Dental Implantology.
