Immediate implant placement clearly has huge benefits for many patients because two oral surgery interventions are carried out at the same time, rather than months apart. Over the last ten years it has become a reliable treatment modality for experienced implant surgeons, with success rates in many papers cited as being similar to those for conventional implant placements in healed bone.
However teeth with apical radiolucencies, suppuration and or clearly visible sinuses are often cited as a contraindication for the immediate placement technique. Stephen Jones will present a 9 year audit of nearly 2,000 implant placements - comparing the success rates of conventionally placed implants with those implants placed into both clearly uninfected sockets and clearly infected sockets.
From this audit the implant failures in both the ‘immediates’ categories have been studied and will be presented and discussed in this talk. Suggestions as to how higher success rates may be achieved in the future will also be discussed.
