Overview of medical risk factors for implantology

Does the patient’s medical status matter or are we just interested in how much bone there is available for implant placement? Do we need to be aware of medical disease process for maintenance and placements alike? Poly-pharmacy and reduced healing capacities do these matter, are we worried?

There will be a brief overview to try and make some sense of what is important. Myths will be looked at as well as worrying trends and how this impacts on ongoing success.

Javed Ikram qualified from Liverpool in 1991. After VT he held SHO posts in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery in Truro, Portsmouth and Bristol. He returned to general practice in 1996 and a year later took a part-time post as a Clinical Assistant in oral surgery at Manchester Dental Hospital. After working through the ranks over 13 years he resigned as a Senior Clinical Fellow for the MSc in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and from his visiting lecturer post at Salford University for MSc in Oral Implantology to set up a multidisciplinary practice in Lytham, Lancashire.

He has lectured at many national (ADI Members' National Forum and at four BDA conferences) and local meetings. He organises hands-on courses on Oral Surgery via Surgiqal. His other time is split supporting dentists via the ADI mentor scheme, examining for the MJDF (Eng) and being a Chairman for Fylde section BDA.
